Fifa ban Chelsea from signing new players until 2011

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/...gning-new-players-until-2011.html

The sanction was announced this afternoon after Fifa’s dispute resolution chamber (DSC) ruled that France teenager Gaël Kakuta had breached his contract with Lens and been induced to do so by Chelsea.

Kakuta, 18, arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2007 and made such an immediate impact that he was voted the academy’s scholar of the year for the 2007-8 season by staff and fellow players.

Hamstring injuries and a fractured ankle restricted his input last season, but he is a regular in the reserve team and described by the club as a “highly-skilled left-footed player".

It is thought certain that Chelsea will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and an official reaction is expected shortly.

The Fifa statement said: “The French club had lodged a claim with Fifa seeking compensation for breach of contract from the player and requesting also sporting sanctions to be imposed on the player and the English club for breach of contract and inducement to breach of contract respectively.

“The DRC found that the player had indeed breached a contract signed with the French club. Equally, the DRC deemed it to be established that the English club induced the player to such a breach.

“As a result the player was condemned to pay compensation in the amount of €780,000 (£680,000), for which the club, Chelsea, are jointly and severally liable, and sporting sanctions were imposed on both the player and Chelsea.

“A restriction of four months on his eligibility to play in official matches has been imposed on Kakuta.

"Chelsea are banned from registering any new players, either nationally or internationally, for the two next entire and consecutive registration periods following the notification of the present decision.

"Furthermore, the club, Chelsea, have to pay Lens training compensation in the amount of €130,000 (£115,000).”

It is not the first time that Chelsea’s transfer tactics have been placed under the spotlight, with the signing of Ashley Cole attracting huge controversy amid ‘tapping up’ allegations.

The ban could have particular significance for Chelsea as the squad is regarded among the older and more experienced of those in the Premier League’s ‘big four’.

At present, Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou are the only frontline senior strikers, while midfielders Frank Lampard, Deco and Michael Ballack are all in their 30s.

Chelsea were relatively cautious in the transfer window, signing Yuri Zhirkov, Daniel Sturridge and Ross Turnbull, suggesting that they were unaware of the potential severity of Fifa's punishment.

Chelsea are not the first club to have been punished in such a way.

Roma were also given a ban for two transfer windows following defender Philippe Mexes' move from Auxerre in 2004.

Roma appealed to the CAS and had the ban cut to one transfer window.

What with the Arsenals Cheating penalty and now Chelskis Tapping up punishment are the authorities finally getting around to addressing the two most odious things in modern football? I doubt it and as usual picking on easy, ahem  Rolling Eyes  English scapegoats whilst allowing the rest of footballs big boys to carry on regardless. Stinks to me unless it’s going to be universally applied and that is going to be very very difficult. I doubt FIFA, EUFA and the FA have the gonads for it. Hope they have though

Wonder what clarkeonenil has to say about it ?  Wink

Roma got done previously although the ban was halved on appeal. Chelski have already announce they will be appealling (I'm not sure who to, they've never appealled to me!  Wink ) and are making lots of indignant noise about the decision. I often think football would be better if it followed rugby unions excellent example and behaved properly and above board at all times - a true gentlemens game.

I'm sure someone will post a single line link to it on here soon, without engaging in any of the discussions on this site... Rolling Eyes

Having re-read this thread, I thought for a moment there you were referring to Ashley Cole and Alex Ferguson.... Wink
