Rumoured on another site as having turned down Huddersfield's offer because he is on his way to Leeds. A lot of blathering about him being a Leeds fan etc.
It may be just my general mood at the moment, but a like-for-like replacement for Hughes (when Hughes is still under contract) wouldn't exactly look like a move in the right direction.
What we need is an influx of players who on the whole are better than most in this League, not reserve players from other League One teams. We need to trim away the mediocrity from our squad, not add to it.
If Bates wasn't looking to build the team on free transfers, we could do worse than look at Crewe's John Brayford for the right back slot now that Derby appear to have cooled their interest in him.
...as an aside I think we should be competing with mid-table Championship sides for players if that is where we want to be. It's no good limiting ourselves to players who aren't wanted above League One level and hoping they'll somehow be good enough to scrape promotion.

Agreed. If we are ever to get out of this dump of a league, we need players that aspire to being able / capable of holding a place in a CCC side.

The problem is money - and the fact that promotion, while welcome if it happens, is not really Bates' priority right now.
Today bit of posturing on the OS is a case in point.
| Quote: | | "But the great thing about Leeds is that we don't have to beg anyone to join us or stay with us. We are in the driving seat." |
"We're adjusting our ambitions to match our circumstances. That way we can always say we're achieving our targets and are in a strong position."
| Quote: | | "A lot of players want to come to play for Leeds and we will choose those who want to play for the club and are prepared to accept reasonable wages but that is down to our manager," |
"I will decide who is cheap enough, then the manager will decide if he can do anything with them."
I don't expect us to see any arrivals until the likes of Beckford and Delph have been sold, which will free up their wages for some out-of-contract replacements.
Until then any offer we make will be on fairly low wages, and while (decent) players won't turn us down flat because of the stature of the club, they won't be rushing into signing for us either.
