http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.c...to-ban-shop-cigarettes.3907261.jp

"Shopkeepers could be banned from displaying cigarettes under plans being considered by the Government, according to reports.
In a bid to cut the number of smokers and prevent children from taking up the habit, ministers have drawn up proposals including a bar on displaying tobacco products and the removal of vending machines from pubs, The Times said.
"

The article goes on, but this is the important bit. Here we have yet another example of state intrusion in our lives.

The "reason" given for proposing banning the display of tobacco products is that if people can't see then they won't be tempted to buy them. Similarly, non-smokers won't suddenly be tempted to buy 10 B&H simply because they can see them in the shop. Further, it will stop 15-year old starting smoking, because it will remove the temptation. Apparently.

I'm sure that the vast majority of regular smokers won't suddenly stop simply because they can't see cigarette on display anymore.
I don't smoke and strangely I have never been tempted to buy a pack of ciggies simply because I've spotted them behind the till while I've been queuing to pay for my paper.
Finally, it doesn't matter if 15-year olds are tempted by a display because they are not legally old enough to buy them, so the shopkeeper shouldn't be selling cigs to them. Another example of New Labour looking to introduce a draconian new law rather than enforcing the perfectly adequate existing one.

What is next? Banning displays of beer to remove the temptation to binge drink? Introduce legislation ordering Jammy Dodgers to be kept under the counter to combat rising obesity?

Be prepared for 6 months of snippets on the news and rags, and then a disproportionate tax rise in the mini budget.

So it was with the "binge drinking"....Remember?.....A long build up....Shots on the breakfast news (usually the same shots) of kids having a ruck, girls throwing up, coppers arresting drunks etc..Public awareness ads on TV on kids falling off of scaffold towers whilst drunk......Give it to us for 6 months, then the government can tell us all how they are doing the country a big favour by slapping a huge health / stealth tax on whatever avenue of fun they have in their thieving sites at that given time.

I am a non smoker, and could not give a toss what the price of a packet of fags is. I am sick of being patronised, manipulated and mislead by the incompetent fools that run the country though.

Considers the possibility of sueing the makers of Jammie Dodgers as a reason for being grossly overweight / obese as they didn't put on the packet "it is not advisable to eat a whole packet with one cup of tea"  Very Happy

2nded ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

All this government does is look for ways to tax people and take more money off people - doesn't matter what the policy is about as long as it is a money spinner for them to help with their spend spend spend policy Evil or Very Mad
