Npower have announced 17% increases on gas prices and 12% on electricity prices. Other will follow as soon as they dare.
To be fair, we're all to blame.
People keep banging on about the environment which has led to other means of generating electricity. One of these ways has been to build lots of brand new gas fired electricity generating power stations - which have used up all that lovely North Sea Gas we used to have. We'd have had enough of our own gas to last another 25 years or so at previous levels of useage, but now it's nearly all gone, so we have to import it from stable and level headed places like Saudi and Russia...and since we've none of our own gas anymore the price has gone up accordingly.
Wind farms are expensive to build and operate and don't generate nearly enough electricity to meet demand.
Of course we have centuries worth of coal buried across the country, which would keep our coal fired power stations going, but the Tories closed almost all the pits and coal is now shipped in from Poland and China. Green CO2 targets mean that coal fired power stations now have to use expensive filtration equipment and guess what - that has put the price up.
Meanwhile the government dither about building new nuclear power stations and due to the time they take to build we face ever increasing prices for the next 10-15 years or power cuts as demand outstrips supply. |

npower is very popular (if thats not a contradiction at the moment) because they are the (German) company that bought out good old Yorkshire Electricity.
We're with them but it's just a matter of waiting until the market settles once they've all put their prices up. |
