Regular readers will know a few of us also frequent www.secretleeds.com

Anyone who'd been on there will see that Phill d is a prolific poster of some great stuff and he's been exploring around The West Riding Pauper & Lunatic Asylum - better known today as High Royds hospital site and come up with this.

What a fantastic building - such a shame they are pulling it down - I assume they are building falt pack houses on there instead Rolling Eyes

I used to go to school opposite the building and we had a few "nutters" escape and visit us in the classrooms or common room - funny as fck

There was one guy that just used to stand in the middle of the road directing traffic

Went to the same school as two(?) of the members of the Kaiser Chiefs (very likely we terrorised them when they were 1st years )

Newcastle has a similar building, St Nick's in Gosforth. It is still in use and built along very similar lines.

The tiling around the arches is superb and the concert hall is tremendous.

It would be a shame to lose such a building despite its history.

Bloody hell that is quite spooky. Wouldn’t like to have been a nutter in those days as opposed to todays enlightened times. Now they simply put them on the FA Committee. We got a similar place in Huddersfield called Storthes Hall. Got shut down when the care in the community scheme was introduced and the inmates became MacDonald’s workers. The site is now a Student Residence, Cant say ive noticed much difference mesen though

Quite. It would be interesting to see what happened if a former patient forgot to take his medication as Care In The Community had forgotten about him and decided to "go home" but found Tarquin and Fenella sat watching QI in a £250k apartment where his bed used to be... Shocked

There was another large hospital for the mentally ill in in Leeds at Meanwood (Meanwood Park Hospital) which is also now a "luxury executive development" - I wonder where all the money the builders pay for these formerly publicly owned places ends up...?
