Whether McClaren goes or not the time has come to end some international careers..put the shits up some established players and start to plan 4-6 years ahead. With that in mind I propose England pick the squad below to play all our internationals until this time next year (that would ential ensuring our first 2 WC qualifying matches were against minnows) and make those left out EARN their place rather than assume it.
Carson
Kirkland
Hart
Foster
-----------
Richards
Jagilka
Onuora
Gilbert
Taylor
Ridgewell
Johnson G
Lescott
Dawson
Knight
Kilgallon
Shorey
Baines
-------------
Watson
Huddelstone
Gardner
Johnson M
Reo-Coker
Noble
Sidwell
Osman
Guthrie
Muamba
Bentley
Morrison
Parker
Milner
Eagles
Lennon
--------------
Sinclair
Young
Barnes
Agbonlahor
Walcott
Derbyshire
Ashton
Varney
Nugent
Lita
Ok people can question some of the picks and the odd exclusion but basically everyone in it is either under 25 or has had limited opportunities. Given them a year and 6-7 games to set a standard and if the Rooney's, Gerrard's, Owen's etc are still better, fine back they come next season, but if they are not then the cycle of automatic picks not peforming is broken, our strength in depth is improved (Crouch, Neville P, Young, don't make me laugh) and playing for your country will mean something for players again.

Lets continue our discussion by widening it a little, here are a list of reasons why the following people should not play international football for England for the next 7 games, bare in mind all of the contributions continue from the opening line “We know what to expect from XXXXXX after 20/30/40/50 caps and…..
Paul Robinson:…..whilst he is getting a harder time than 9 clean sheets in this qualifying competition justify he clearly needs a break and more competition to keep him on his toes.
David James:….he should retire from international football, his chances of getting another tournament are slim and he is just a road-block to emerging keepers.
Gary Neville:…is another who should be expecting never to add to his cap collection, with his declining pace and crosses from hell he will be lucky to play for Man U over the next year never mind England.
Phil Neville:….should give us the break from his sub appearances by retiring with his brother, something most of us wished he’d done in 2000.
Wes Brown:…should be looking to establish himself in one position at Man U, is he a full-back? Is he a centre-back?
Rio Ferdinand:…..is taking his place for granted, if we wanted a smooth operator we ask Sade. Could spend the year away deciding on how to tell his brother he will never be good enough.
John Terry:…is never an England captain, maybe if out for 7 games might understand a fit player is better than Frankenstein.
Ledley King:…needs games first to remind himself what a football looks like.
Jonathan Woodgate:…probably needed by Boro too much to ever be fit enough to play for England.
Sol Campbell:….will no doubt be doing the decent thing and retire before most.
Ashley Cole:…needs to spend more time thinking about his attitude rather than his next catwalk appearance, might not even be the best LB at Chelsea.
Wayne Bridge:….needs to play more, displace Ashley Cole at Chelsea and then maybe England.
Shaun Wright Phillips:….have a word with his step-dad about finishing.
Steven Gerrard:…Benitez is right, Gerrard’s best position is right-side midfield, needs a break.
Frank Lampard:……if he wasn’t the man most like to do a Scholas and retire before 30 he bloody should do.
Gareth Barry:…..whilst unlucky after performances it would give him the chance to establish he can be consistent at Villa.
Joe Cole:…he needs to decide if he is a midfielder or an expensive fill-in on the left, another who takes ability for granted.
Owen Hargreaves:…a year at Man U getting up to pace with the PL awaits first.
Michael Carrick:…a year competing with Owen Hargreaves awaits.
Alan Smith:…striker?, midfield?, in the hole?, in the wilderness? Time to sort it out lad.
Wayne Rooney:….if he is going to be the player he looked like he might be over 3 games in Euro 2004 he needs to up his game. How many times is he going to be the pivotal figure in our disasters?
Michael Owen;…it’s not natural to play more games for England than your club, back to basics.
Peter Crouch:…needs a change of club and if he thinks he is going to play international football again he needs to look at Koller as a role model.
Emile Heskey:…thanks for the memory, now pee off.
Stuart Downing:….needs to realise wingers occasionally cross, a bit of space might bring him back to his potential.
I assume no-one expects Luke Young, Kerion Richardson, Kerion Dyer, Jermaine Jenas or Jermaine Defoe to even be looked at.
So their you have it. Tin hat on, trench dug. |

Not a lot to disagree with there THT. Tin hat not required. Im like boxy though about the original list of young hopefulls. Its probably more to do with my ignorance than their impact but I haven’t even heard of most of those players. I reckon the problem lies much deeper than a crap manager and not enough youth.
It wasn’t that long ago that Gerrard, Lampard et all were the young lions sprung from a golden generation of players ready to launch England to world cup glory. WTF happened to that. Theres a definite line were playing for England stops becoming a wage earning enhancement to a wage earning hindrance. Thats when they bale out or not put total commitment into it.
Until the FA, Prem Mangers and Prem Players stop looking at the national team as an inconvenient diversion we are destined for lifetime of under achievement. Until that happens those young players are simply going to turn into the bunch of fraudsters we have now. How we can do that is a little trickier than saying it.
We could start buy eliminating all these bullshit friendlies we play. So that putting on the three lions actually means something. Course you’ll get the "how can we try things out and look at players and develop team understanding if we don’t play these games" Well for a start these friendlies do bugger all to address any of these issues anyway.
We could also try playing players in the roles they are accustomed to at their clubs. We could also start playing in the manner of club football. This Veneblesesque shite he is inflicting on us is just confusing the players.
We could also finally accept that Gerrard AND Lampard is pantish and shouldn’t be considered. The whole of football knows this.
There is of course another aspect of this. Perhaps English players are just not good enough. You only have to compare them to their overseas counterparts to see the difference in technique. The Russians for instance, a very mediocre team, were receiving the ball, controlling, turning, passing and moving in one movement. Compare that with our players and its like watching a tank turn around in a bog.
We have got to decide what we want of our national team. The Vast majority of English fans want to see pride. English style football and players doing their best under a qualified manager who is able to get the best out of them. It doesn’t really matter if we don’t win anything as long as we have that. Anything less than that is cheating the fans.
