mrs raveys Norton subscription on t'laptop has expired and I've been hearing a few not so good things about them lately.
I'm sure a few people have commented on some free downloadable AV software - AVP or something?
Anyone recommend owt and provide a link?
Apparently we get free AV software through our BT Internet connection but I'm a bit dubious as I can't see anything on the 'puter to say it's there (wireless router, not the 'ome 'ub)
Cheers! |

I have Mcafee on my machine as the main AV protection. However, I still use several anti spam / adware / spyware progs, all gleaned from www.download.com
Never had a serious problem and for $30 for two years at a time I'm not bothered to change! Updates all the time, on it's own. The only major attack I had the system dealt with it perfectly!! |

Agree with both Glenn and Armley.
AVG is a good one. I also use Zonealarm and Advanced Windows Care (regular scans clear up all sorts of crap as well as cookies). And, of course, they all have the advantage of being free!

what are the several anti spam/adware/spyware progs?
We use Norton and spybot but you lot seem to have a real thing against Norton |
Don't have a problem with Norton, never used it. Just really happy with McAfee!
The other progs I use and run weekly are
Spyware Dr
Pest patrol
counterspy
Stinger
These usually cop for the adware / spyware that the main AV does't consider a threat, but more a pain that slows the system down. To run em all take a little while, but well worth it! |

The trouble with Norton, in the past at least, was that it was very memory hungry. I'd end up switching off outbound email protection, then inbound. Even file transfer times were greatly increased to the point where I'd end up ending the Norton processes for the sake of my sanity (and patience ). I used to use ZoneAlarm as my firewall, but that to had its own issues with more and more applications and that too had to be removed . I now rely on my router firewall.
CA Security Center (12 month free trial)
CCleaner
Spyware Doctor
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware 2007
My 12 month trial expires in December, so I shall be in the "free" market for an alternative when the time arrives . |

| I use Norton and have done for years. I have no memory issues. I don't get infected and my machine is not taken over to any extent that it becomes aggravating or degrades performance. In short....For me...It works so why change.
