Yorkshire Accent - intelligent!Brummies come bottom of accents league
A study matching accents with perceived intelligence found that the distinctive Birmingham accent - as spoken by rocker Ozzy Osbourne - gave an even worse impression than having nothing to say.
Yorkshire folk, on the other hand, should open their mouths as much as possible, according to the findings. Their accent was rated the most intelligent-sounding, beating the clipped vowels and precise diction of what is popularly known as the Queen's English.
Scientists asked 48 volunteers to look at photos of female models while listening to recordings of women with different accents describing their lives. They were then asked to rate the pictured models for intelligence, giving them marks out of ten.
Scores were given for Yorkshire, Birmingham and RP (received pronunciation, or "Queen's English") accents, and volunteers were also asked to give an intelligence rating when no voice was played.
To avoid participants being influenced by appearance, models of roughly equal attractiveness were chosen for the photos, and the accents attributed to them mixed up. The researchers found that accents made no difference to perceptions of attractiveness, but had a significant impact on whether or not a particular model was seen as intelligent.
The average intelligence ratings given by the study participants, out of ten, were: Yorkshire, 6.71; RP, 6.67; Silence, 5.99; Birmingham, 5.6.
Dr Lance Workman, who led the research at Bath Spa University, said: "One of reasons for doing this study was to find out about stereotypes.
"Surveys have shown that a lot of people associate Birmingham with criminal activity, and they associate criminal activity with low intelligence."
He added hastily: "Can I just say that whenever I've been to Birmingham I've found people to be very bright and friendly."

Quite a few call centres for finance houses are Scottish based as apparently their accent is meant to be reassuring and confident when dealing with financial matters.
None of them are in Liverpool

Actually First Direct set up their call centres in Leeds many years ago as market research indicated that the Yorkshire accent was well received by all and was thought to be trustworthy, reassuring, intelligent and honest.
Yorkshire is the call centre capital of England (not sure if that is a good thing...  ) for these very reasons. Which is just as well as there is bugger all else to do since the pits shut and the steel industry was sold overseas.

Seriously,, what a load of tosh. All British dialects are brilliant and a testament to the rich heritage and diverse culture we have. I think the Brummie accent is fantastic. They have a fine sense of humour unique to them and it is perfectly delivered with that droll accent.
If any accent needs ridiculing its that ridiculous made up and in no way natural so called queens English . Dull dreary boring lifeless tones delivered by idiots spouting utter nonsense.

Well that's nice, and just typical of what this country has come to be. So an honest white working class lad like me, takes exception to the findings of a degrading, pointless and patronising survey. A survey that subliminally plants discriminatory images into peoples perceptions of those good men and women of the West Midlands......And I am "not worth it".
