What a difference a coach makes - Australia winAustralia strolled to a 3-0 victory of Qatar in an Asian Zone World Cup qualifier tonight and it could easily have been more. Qatar only had one good chance.
And this highlighted the difference a good coach can make.
Under Guus Hiddink Australia played very well at the World Cup 2006, going out to a last minute penalty winner to eventual champions Italy
Graham Arnold took over and it was all down-hill from there. The standard of football fell away dramatically and Australia flopped (as one of the favourites) at the Asian Nations Cup.
Pim Verbeek (another Dutchman) took over recently and while it is early days yet, with limited preparation time, coached Australia to an easy victory in the aforementioned game tonight. The verve and the passing game and the quality football were back.

It is only the second stage of Asian Zone games. Five groups of four with the group winners and runners-up progressing to the next stage. Two groups of five in that stage with winners and runners-up qualifying for the World Cup. Third placed teams have further play-offs.
