Welcome to Oz...

Super-sized tarantulas are spinning a web of terror in a town in Australia.

Residents of Bowen* in North Queensland have reported seeing scores of "especially large" spiders in their back gardens.

Local pest controller Audy Geizler said he was astonished at their size.

A photo of one of the creepie crawlies indicated its body alone was 5cm long.

"It was found in a public area, just wandering around," he said, "It's a bit scary for the people."

Tarantulas are also known as bird-eating spiders and whistling spiders because of the sound they make.

Females live up to 30 years, males up to eight years.

While the spider's bite is poisonous, it is not deadly to humans and is most likely to make someone sick.

Despite their bird-eating tag, the tarantulas rarely eat birds, although they do ocasionally feast on newly-hatched chicks.

Instead they eat mainly insects, lizards, frogs - and other spiders!

Shocked

* - the town of Bowen is named after the legendary Engish comedian, Jim Bowen. Possibly.
