Download AVG 1st, and make sure it's working fine, then when Norton expires, remove it.. That's what I'd do anyway..

why? 'cos AVG is better or cos AVG is free?
Baldy

Cant really say which is better, they both seem to do their jobs, and I know a few people who do use AVG, and never had any problems with virus's etc, similar story to Norton as well, though I used to use Norton mesen, and got infected on various occasions, I personally use VET antivirus anyway, but if it's free and it works fine then go with AVG..

Main thing with either, is that you keep your virus deffinitions up to date..

The trouble with Norton is that it is highly protective and a bit precious and may not let you operate AVG while it is active. It tries to stop lots of stuff like Spybot and other similar programs.

I don't know if you only want an anti-virus or you want something broader that includes a firewall and so on but the free AVG version is only an anti-virus as far as I know.

I have the full version of AVG and it appears to be working. I downloaded it from the Net and the licence cost me 90 Australia dollars (40 pounds) for two years. Which was well worth it in my opinion.

I have Norton On-line security on my PC, cos I get it free from my ISP.
Mrs ravey has the free AVG package (we don't need a fire wall as we are both running XP - which has a firewall - and the router is a firewall as well.
As a note of interest mrs ravey should have been able to download the free Norton On-line as well but it wouldn't work on her laptop...
Mrs raveys laptop previously had just plain Norton Antivirus on and it now works miles faster without it.

A friend had Norton 360 (which cost £50 on special offer) and says it damn near crippled his laptop because of it's demands on the system.
He's removed it and replaced it with AVG and is more than pleased.

I'm fairly sure the download details tell you to remove Norton (or any other AV software) first, but it shows you how to do this easily - click start, select control panel, then add or remove programs and choose Norton (Symantec) from the list.

As ravey sayd, you should not run more than one anti virus or fire wall at a time because they will conflict with each other.

A friend of mine fixes computers for a living and recommends AVG on his website

Norton needs an enormous amount of memory usage and is one of the reasons peoples computers eventually stop working - mcafee is also the same (apparantly) - get zonealarm if you want a free firewall.

Other valid point he makes is that hackers / virus writers ALWAYS go after Norton as its the most well known and is a feather in their cap if they achieve their goal - so by going for a less popular one you are more likely NOT to be targeted.

I will say this.....I use Norton anti virus and inetrnet security. It has an overhead on my machine, but when I got it built, I asked for extra resources. I use it because I have never had a virus, trojan anything....I had infections on 2 PC's using AVG / Zonealarm.

This is not an emotive issue for me....I can't get excited about it, as I have seen others do (not on here I hasten to add Very Happy )....For me, I need a working PC in order to trade, and memory is cheap......

I've always used either AVG or Norton, the latter usually slows your system slightly and it has be known to conflict with other programmes as others have put but I've always found it to be slightly more efficient at stopping viruses before they infect your machine.

AVG does it's job though seemingly just as well but doesn't 'look' as nice in my opinion. But on the other hand your machine doesn't seem to be as slow when it's sat on there.

1982 C64/ZX Edition actually  Wink

In fact I've just been watching the latest edition of Tomorrows World and they've been reporting on how a online computer thingy called the Internet or something currently used primarily by the military will eventually be available to everyone. They reported that 'cyberspace' will have endless 'websites' of homemade videos such as those seen on 'You've been framed' and 'Beadles about'. It will also allow people all over the globe to 'meet' and online communities will pop up overnight.

All through your home telephone line....

Only snag is it'll run over British Telecom's 'network' and we all know how bad they are at providing state of the art services...

Pipedreams.....

I've heard that too, they think it will be called a 'Walkman' - what a stupid name! What the hell has that got to do with listening to music.

Here's a killer for you... they expect that the Giant Road Map book you can buy in all good petrol stations will eventually be a thing of the past and we'll move to a small device that sits on your car window and a WOMAN yes that's right a WOMAN will tell you the directions to where you want to go....  Laughing  Laughing  Laughing
