Well, we're under a week away from the start of the season at last.

I'm feeling fairly positive. We've beaten one Premiership powerhouse and held another to a very creditable draw, whilst managing the same against another side just relegated from the top flight having outplayed them for huge parts of the game.

A more solid looking defence, a keeper who looks like he could push Casper, the same midfield and Beckford and Becchio upfront mean that I'm feeling confident for this season. Our performances in the later pre-season friendlies have added to that confidence.

At this stage the only major problem I see is if Becks gets injured or still happens to leave us.

Opening day 1989/90 Leeds play Newcastle on the opening day. End of season Leeds is promoted from the 2nd Division to the 1st Division (as they were then known)

Opening day 2002/03 Leeds play Newcastle on the opening day. End of season Leeds is relegated from the Premiership to the Championship.

Relevance you ask? Both Newcastle and Exeter City (whom we play on Saturday on the opening day of the season) have a home ground called St James Park.

I don't think we're any stronger than last season, and I think the league will be more competitive than it has been for the past two years.

It could be just today's developments but I feel we are a League One club with League One expectations and League One ambitions. Sadly I think this will result in a League One future for a while longer.

Let's hope I'm reading it all wrong.

With Grayson in charge last season, we accumulated approx 70% of the points to play for. Playing that stat in over 46 games gives a points tally in the mid 90's. So we may not need to be stronger than last year, and more of the same could be enough.

With some "bigger" clubs joining the league, we are no longer the only "cup final" in town, and there is nothing yet (early days I know) to suggest that any of the new comers will be outstandingly stronger than last season's top 6.

I am quietly confident of a top 4 finish, but we need to keep Beckford.

I think we are stronger than last year particularly in the crucial back three anchor of keeper and two center halves. I also think we have better full back options and cover. The only place we are short is wide left. Im not saying we will win the league but I am saying we have a better manager more capable of reading the situations and responding to them better than his immediate predecessors. Altogether I’m a little more positive than nine months ago
