The real reason pubs are closing?

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homep...ews/money/city/article2213913.ece

In addition to the story above, I also read of one of the Pub Co's charging it's tied in leaseholders almsot double the open market price for a keg of Carling lager.

I can't find the article online, so I won't name the company, but a keg from the brewers on the open market costs £63, but the Pub Co were charging their leaseholders £111 for the same beer. The leaseholders are of course bound to purchase their beer from the Pub Co as a condition of their lease.

And people wonder why pubs are closing?

Its cos of the no smoking ban Id say.

Its the thought of the drink AND the fag if oyu go out to a pub.

If everyone lit up at the same time is everyone in Britain going to be arrested??

I think we should all light up and sod the law!

...and as for those of us who choose not to shove toxic fumes down our lungs who are happy not being forced to do it when we want to go out... what? We just live with it cause people want to smoke?
EW

They should have smoking and non smoking pubs then or heavy extractor fans.

I dont smoke now btw i gave it up.

I think to an extent blaming the smoking ban is a smoke screen (pardon the pun).

It certainly hasn't helped, but the main issue for us certainly is the actual cost of a few drinks down the local. Prices locally are now at the point where they've broken through the £5 a round marker for just the two of us which is an important psychological barrier. At a couple of drinks an hour thats over £10 your chucking over the bar.

Government duty increase haven't helped, but when the big pub co's tie their leaseholders into buying from them and then charge double the going rate for the popular stuff and in many cases dictate the price the licensee can charge, then it's no wonder folk are staying at home.

Wetherspoons, like them or hate them, charge cheap prices so clearly it is possible and I've yet to see one of their pubs with no-one in. The same round we'd have locally is less than half the price in Wetherspoons, and they're clearly still making a profit.
You can't tell me the likes of Punch or Enterprise (for example) don't have similar purchasing power than Wetherspoons do, so why is the beer so much more expensive?

If you've ever drunk in a Wetherspoons (and I have, in several  Embarassed ),  the beer never seems to taste like it should - my theory is that they buy barrels that are nearing the end of their shelf life at a discount and knock them out as quickly as possible. The difference is to the extent that I'd rather pay £3.00 for a pint near where I work than a quid across the road in the Wetherspoons.
