The Rabbitohs - gutless one week, brain dead the nextMore bad news I'm afraid, yet another Rabbitohs loss to report on, 25-12 to the Bulldogs
The game started well enough, neither the Rabbitohs nor the Bulldogs were particularly impressive but Souths were the slightly better and comfortably in control, not being threatened by the Bulldogs attack. Ben Lowe scored on his debut and Eddie Paea wriggled through some poor Bulldogs defence to give Souths to tries in the first half. Both were converted by Isaac Luke and Souths led 12-0 and looked to be on the way to victory as they looked comfortable enough in snuffing out any Bulldogs attacks.
Then with 39 minutes gone (1 minute to half time), the Bulldogs had the ball but were tackled on the 5th tackle just over the half way line - no threat we fans all thought. All of a sudden, Dean Widders needlessly committed a play-the-ball infringement and the Bulldogs scored from the resultant penalty, 12-6 at half time...a turning point in the game.
But it needn't have been. However just after half time, the scene somehow repeated itself. 5th tackle around the half way line, penalty conceded, Bulldogs try and it was 12 all. Just 4 minutes later the Bulldogs crossed again to make it three tries and 18 points in the space of just 7 minutes and from then on they controlled the match.
Souths tried hard but their attacks and kicks were totally ineffective and the Bulldogs wrapped it up with another try and a field goal in the closing moments.
So yet again we fans left the stadium downcast. A gutless display one week followed by a brain dead display the week after. Two of the worst ways to lose a game.
We know they can do better and hopefully soon will but the stinging defence of last season is gone and the attack no more organised.
PS Thank you to the Broncos for beating the Roosters at least.

Whats the odds for the wooden spoon Harry.
And your right about em being brain dead, 2nd half they had no idea how to attack, especially when they had 4 restarts from bulldogs try line, whats this with always cutting back in to middle where buldogs had the numbers.
Well done again Brisbane, thats 2 fom 2 now

Don't ask me, though the brain dead comment was more about the penalties conceded than the lack of intelligence in attack.
I'd like to think we are going to be well away from the wooden spoon, but it'll take a lot more than we have shown the last couple of matches.

Three losses from three
The Rabbitohs maintained their 100% loss record for the season going down 26-22 to the second worst performing team in the NRL...guess who's the worst.
The early signs are bad, things can only get better - we hope. Souths traveled to the mountains to meet the Penrith Panthers in a bottom of the table clash this afternoon (Sunday). Like the Rabbitohs, the Panthers were winless after their first two games of the season. So one of the two were destined to break their ducks - thought I suppose the result could have a rare draw.
The first half saw Souths concede a succession of ill-disciplined penalties on top of a rash of mistakes that seem to have dogged the team this season. Penrith stormed to a 10-0 lead in just over ten minutes and scored another converted try to lead 16-0. All the tries were avoidable but the Bunnies legendary defence was once again missing. In a rare move of quality by the Bunnies, John Sutton (playing at 5/8th and one of 6 or 7 positional changes made by coach Jason Taylor for the match) passed a quality ball to Fetuli Talanoa who exploded from the line, swerved round the Panthers full back and scored under the posts. Isaac Luke slotted the conversion and the Rabbitohs had cut the deficit to 16-6. A better team than Penrith would have piled on more than those 16 points, but the try gave the Rabbitohs' fans hopes which were soon too be dashed when more defensive bungling let in another Panthers try and the home team lead 16-6 at half time. The Panthers were average and the Bunnies atrocious.
The second half was the mirror image of the first. The Rabbitohs improved from atrocious to somewhere between awful and average and the Panthers game collapsed and it was they who started to concede penalties, possession and position. John Sutton and Michael Greenfield scored tries for the Rabbitohs both were converted and suddenly the score was 24-18 the Panthers having kicked a penalty between the two tries. The Panthers kicked another penalty to stretch the gap beyond a converted try and the Panthers fans breathed easier again but their nerves returned when Dean Widders crossed for the Rabbitohs and it was 26-22, 8 minutes to go and game on - both teams being so poor than anything could happen. But the Panthers held on to leave the Rabbitohs winless and facing an away trip to last season's beaten grand finalists the Manly Sea Eagles next weekend.
A poor game by two teams who played poorly and created little - tries coming on the back of defensive lapses and penalties more than anything else. I'm seriously beginning to worry that Souths will more likely be fighting to avoid the wooden spoon rather than chasing a finals' spot this season. I know the season is only three games old but I have not seen anything to give me hope yet.
