matt smith seems to be the favourite. who've i've never heard of, yet i'm told has been in a few things already. last time this happened it was david tennant, therefore i'm not too worried.

Slightly concerned that "sources" within the Beeb are linking the likes of Robert Carlyle and James McAvoy with the role.

Plum job though it may be within the world of Saturday night tea time telly, I doubt very much that proper Hollywood actors will be seen in the Tardis on a regular basis.

Much more interesting is the rumour that either Patterson Joseph (Survivors) or Colin Salmon could be in line to become the first black Doctor. Colin Salmon was linked with the James Bond gig before Daniel Craig signed up, so who knows?

it was never going to be joseph or salmon, joseph was in the the finale of the 2005 series and salmon was in it more recently in a two-parter last year. how can anyone honestly believe that someone who has already played a character in the show so recently would be cast as the Doctor? it would take a hell of a lot of explaining in the script.

it's Matt Smith. i liked him in the interview, think he'll do a great job!

Here's the new Doctor

First impressions are I'm not going to like him, but the jury is out and I'm happy to give him a chance.  He has one hell of an act to follow though..David Tennant for me was by far the best Doctor, in my lifetime at least.

At least its not a woman!

He seems very young and it part of the lost generation of Dr Who viewers, so has a limited perception of the role and what its all about. That could work in either direction. I would say he has an awful lot of viewing to do in the next year.....

Whilst he praised DT on making the role his own I have a sneaking suspicion he didn't actually watch him in the role.

There is a acknowledged gap in demographics for the show that sits around the late teen/early 20's......for the show to survive in the ratings they have to get this age group interested as they are the watchers of the future and their children.

By casting a 26 year old to play the doctor I think the BBC hope they will achieve that. Target audience are those that watch Robin Hood and Merlin. Oops that will be me then  Very Happy

you cynic! sure, it's hard to tell from a 5 minute interview (though judging from your comment that your are robin hood/merlin viewer you didn't actually watch it, i assume that only the DW fans watched Confidential - if i'm wrong, apologies) but he certainly convinced me that he had watched at least one episode of Tennant and knew what he was talking about.
but while i think knowing the show, and the world of the Doctor will be helpful to a new Doctor, i'm not sure it is necessarily a bad thing if Smith doesn't, thats the beauty of Doctor Who, each new actor brings something completely new and fresh to the role, and the way the show is set up, they can be virtual opposites and it still works.
one good thing about being cast so far in advance (i don't know whether actors usually get this sort of notice of a part), smith has the chance to really build his character properly, and to do that research.
i'm not sure about his age either, the guy is only three years older than me ffs! BUT I trust Steven Moffat's judgement, and Russell T Davies's for that matter, they aren't actors, and both seemed genuinely thrilled at the appointment.
it will be new, it will be different, but it will still be Doctor Who!  Very Happy

Initial reaction (like CW's) is that he isn't an obvious choice and I'm not sure how things will go. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong (again).
cardboardbox?Youwerelucky

My initial reaction was that they made a full programme about "Doctor Who" to announce him as the audience would be hugely under-whelmed (i.e. if we didn't know until the episode in 2010 when David Tennant "regenerates" to find out it would have been a HUGE disappointment to get a fairly "unknown" actor")

I think they are giving people a year to get to know the guy  Rolling Eyes
raveydavey

It should have been Colin Salmon. The world (universe, even) is ready for it's first black Doctor.

Still have serious doubts about this new lad.

I can remember I was mortified when a scarf wearing, cricket bat wielding ex-vet got the gig, and he turned out alright actually

he now goes by the name "Dangerous"

Why am I a cynic?

And yes you owe apologies.

I have watched every episode of Dr who since the early 70's. My first doctor was Jon Pertwee. I only watched from the early 70's as I wasn't in the country before then!

I watch the repeats on BBC3 and confidential and even better my message sound is the Tardis.

Don't start on me Anna! Evil or Very Mad

(which now i read again, makes it obvious that you did.) and the stuff about how they are targeting merlin/robin hood viewers, it came across as you meaning you watched them and not DW.
it also seemed as if you hadn't seen the same interview, he seemed pretty clued up on the role to me. *shrugs*

I bet the new Doctor, after regenerating, doesn't have half as good as an opening line as DT did.

Anyone remember what it was?  Fu*king brilliant line had me loving him from the very 1st minute!!

Aye..

After he re-generated into his present form, he looked round and suddenly fondled his teeth then said "how cool, new teeth!"

Brilliant!
