Snow!

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/200902...-as-snow-storms-loom-dba1618.html

All weekend they've been banging on about the Siberian snow heading for us, and that we might even die if we attempt to leave the house in the next week and we've not even had a covering of the white stuff yet.

Even this very morning the weather forecaster said that by 3pm today all would be white, but we had nowt but a few wisps of the stuff.

So come on, where is it?  Very Happy

PS - hello to all our upside down friends who are currently sweltering in a "killer heatwave"  Cool
eddiesleftfoot

No sign this side of the hills yet...but here's hoping for tomorrow, although I have got a ticket for Orient on Tuesday which I guess will probably be off.
Mort

Started to hit here (South of London) about 6.30 - 7.00 got a light covering and it stopped again. So far, pretty much as predicted for here so not looking forward to tomorrow.
Garp

Been snowed in since September, but we don't talk about girlie stuff like that down here. Rolling Eyes

Hmmmm!  Rolling Eyes

Anyway, we live on a road that has two main bus routes using it as well as a fire station about 100 yards from our house, and we only live about half a mile from the council depot where the gritters are based, so we normally see several gritters go past on an evening when bad weather is forecast.
We haven't see a single one yet today... Shocked
halfaperson

Tons of it up here on these here hills. Been coming down all day and night. No sign of any let up either.
Garp

My lot are out in it. Me and Mrs nlag enjoying what we can put on TV etc....Only and inch or two layed so far

No Snow here, nor a heatwave, Mexicans and Sydneysiders are sweltering though

Sweltering a bit less now that we know Keane won't be the next Sydney FC boss

Forty degrees predicted here for the weekend
Tommo

A few inches here in Gods own and still coming down in flurries!!!
Cockney White

Had about a foot so far and it's still falling!  Started yesterday (Sunday) morning and has been coming down pretty much ever since.  Am unable to get to work today, M25, M2, M20 all largely closed and Southeastern Rail Network totally suspended.  God knows what it would be like if we hadn't expected it!

Wow - looks nice though.

What are the chances of the Orient game being called off?

Personally I love the snow H and I agree it does look good.

I would say the Orient game will almost certainly be off.

I remember getting to school 8 miles away, then they shut the school and buses couldn't get up the hill, so we walked home. Was great fun.....An adventure. My lad is at the same chool, they had a day off, and he has been out all day with mates......Not the kids fault.....As you say, nanny state....My lad says that even if they had gone in they would not be allowed out of the school buildings in case someone fell and sued the school Shocked

Bradford LEA announced mid-afternoon today that every school in the Bradford area will be closed tomorrow. This is despite all the main routes being clear and open and flowing freely.

OK, we're expecting more snow overnight, but come on! Teachers truly are lazy bastards.

Mind you, I nearly fell off the sofa laughing when the main story was the "worst weather in 18 years" which has paralysed the country south of Watford and Mary Nightingale was live in Trafalgar Square with all of two inches of snow on the ground. Soft southern shandy drinking poofs (no offence).

What an absolute bunch of tosspots we have running the country if a couple of inches of snow has this effect.

Two snowmen stood next to each other in the park.

The first one says "Can you smell carrots?"

None taken (can't remember which shandy drinking poof started this thread about "oooh it's going to snow" Rolling Eyes . News......More to do with the fact that news channels have all dumbed down to the lowest denominator, and  so no news is big news now. I used to really enjoy the Beeb in the morning. It is now competing with GMTV IMO. At least Channel 4 breakfast never pretended to be anything other than light hearted mush.

Quite - GMTV could quite easily make a crisis out of nothing. In fact they do most mornings with their sensationalist reporting sandwiched between adverts and plugs for their idiot tax phone in "competitions".

The telly stays well and truly off on a morning in our house (unless it's the 5.15am repeat of Countdown...) Wink
Garp

Never sure whether to watch Countdown or turn over and try and interest mrs nlag in a conondrum.....At least the telly usually turns on.

My son didn't go to school today cos he has a broken foot and has it in plaster, and it would get wet in the snow!! He was gutted cos he couldn't go out in the snow!!!

In my day he could have gone out, and then gone to A and E for a new plaster....Scarey women on A and E these days though

Whatever you do, don't let him sit near a window looking at the neighbours through binoculars...that always leads to trouble.

Yes I think we are nutters to put up with some of the shit we do!!!

I triaged a guy last night who had " fallen in the snow and hurt his arm" I sent him for an X-ray only to find out he had been at St James A/E 2 hrs earlier with same problem and had an X-ray there and only had bruising!!! Got sent home with a telling off!!! Took him 2 hrs to leave the department. Had to threaten to get him removed by security!! Twisted Evil

The last time it snowed staff that were late for work at the Leeds hospitals had to pay back the time from annual leave or stay later on a shift the amount of time thay were late by. Graditude from the management for struggling to get into work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, there be the lesson. You should have trained as a teacher and then you could taken as much time off as you liked... Wink

Honestly, this is becoming a country of lightweights. I've got a 25 mile journey to work - snow was forecast so I got up a little earlier, drove a little steadier in the bad (but not unpassable) conditions and arrived at work a whole 10 minutes later than I normally do - and well before I was actually due to start work. A colleague lives 13 miles away and did the same. In fact everyone in our department made it in (eventually)*. Yet other departments were at less than half strength Monday AND Tuesday with staff who lived as little as a mile from the office "snowed in". Almost unbelievably these departments were still having trouble getting staff in today, with many arriving late (including some who turned up at lunchtime claiming they'd set off at 8am - 4 hours to do two miles????)

* - perhaps the difference in my department is that we all started off in the motor trade, so have experience as youngsters of that wonderful incentive scheme - "if you don't turn in, you don't get paid". That tends to focus the mind!

yeah we were told the same, if we didn't get in last time we had to take annual leave.

So my risk assessment is that my journey to work over the north penninnes could be fatal but I am not allowed to work from home (this would be possible for a day). Therefore my management would rather I risk death than be sensible Evil or Very Mad

However, we are based in the same office as the trust financial dept. On Monday afternoon their director said he was shutting the building at 3.30pm due to the forecast  and could all staff take work home in case the storm forecast for overnight was bad and people couldn't get in, they would be able to work from home Rolling Eyes therefore in the trust I work its appears to be one rule for one dept and another rule for another Evil or Very Mad  Evil or Very Mad

Sounds about right!!!!!
raveydavey

Been snowing here since about 3pm this afternoon and there is already a Met Office severe weather warning in place for tomorrow into Tuesday.

To be honest I'm bored with it now. It took forever to get the packed ice off the front path today (an inch thick in places!) and now it's all white again  Mad And I'm having to park in a car park when I go to work cos the normal street I park on doesn't get gritted and is covered in a sheet of ice - I did go try it late last week and it was like glass. £18 a week it's costing me for car parking now!!!

Can anyone remember last time we had snow on the ground for a week in this country? Last time I can remember was the mid-90's. Normally it's gone within a day.

On a happier note though, the dog loves the snow and even sits whinging by the door wanting to go out and play in it!
