Sequels

If a film is successful, some Hollywood mogul usually decides to cash in with a sequel - or even a threequel.

Some films are best as a stand alone masterpiece - think The Matrix or The Wizard of Oz with their frankly not as good follow ups.

Sometimes though the sequel is as good or even better than the original - The Empire Strikes Back is widely regarded as the best film of the (original) Star Wars trilogy for example and Terminator 2 is the best of that line by far.

Occasionally all the films in the franchise are belters - like Shrek, or the Indiana Jones trilogy (we'll ignore the forthcoming fourquel for now), but usually the theme is over egged and we end up with dross like Terminator 3 or either of the Matrix sequels where all the special effects in the world could hide the fact they'd not left enough in the budget for a decent script...and the least said about Police Academy 5 the better...

Worst still is when someone decides to re-invent the wheel and come along with blatant money making prequel (yes, George Lucas, I'm looking at you...)"new" Star Wars films indeed.

So which sequels rock and which one suck? What films would you like to see a follow up to?

The prequel Star Wars films were ACE (as a star wars fan)

People forget that when most of my generation last saw Star Wars we were aged between 8-13. Now we are watching the movies as 28-35 year olds - OF COURSE we are going to hate Jar jar Binks ITS FOR KIDS - in the same way as I soon began to resent the Ewoks on ROTJ - unfortunately for George Lucas he still had to balance the films with the fact they ARE for kids but also make them appealing to his 80's generation kids who were now all grown up with their own children.

I do not know ONE single UNDER 10 that disliked Star Wars - christ there are better space battles, better lightsabre battles, better weapons, better effects. The fact that he has to throw in to the mix a "kiddie" character just annoyed the adults (who now have much more to worry about than whats in theor sandwiches for lunch).

ICONIC things from the prequel star wars

STAR WARS I
Darth Maul
The Double Ended Lightsabre
Obi Wan as a padawan
Quigon Jin
The Pod Race
The Discovery of Anakin (AKA Darth Vader)
The manipulation of the Jedi by Darth Sidious (hence the phantom menace)
The "rock hardness" of the Jedi (something that was never quite portrayed in the originals)

STAR WARS II
Jango Fett
Anakin as a padawan
A young unbeatable Obi Wan
FUCKING YODA FUCKING KICKING ASS WITH A LIGHT SABRE
An awesome final battle between an ARMY of jedi and the robot army.
The Clone Troopers
The Space Chase of the assassin

STAR WARS III
Unbelieveable opening space battle sequence
Darth Sidious manipulating the "chosen one" - Anakin Skywalker
Darth Sidious kicking the butt of FOUR JEDI at the same time
The death of Mace Windu
The TOTAL descruction of the Jedi (something which has always fasinated me when I saw the original 3)
Darth Sidious lightsabre duel with YODA - AND YODA getting HIS arse kicked
Anakin massacring the Younglings (deeply disturbing)
Anakin being Reborn as Darth Vader

Yes there are faults with the episodes I,II & III (trade federation blockades, politics, love stories) but IMHO they are not substandard to the originals - it is just that we OLDER  Crying or Very sad

Aliens was a brilliant film, full of pacey tension and adrenalin. Maybe didn’t have the creepy slow burning atmospheric menace of the first but a better film IMO

Godfather2 had the slight edge on 1 if you ask me, but both brilliant. It seemed to have a more complex and interesting story.

I Liked All the Spag Western dollar trilogy but they got better culminating in The Good, Bad and the Ugly. A timeless piece of greed, ethics, coolness, revenge, humanity and fab music to boot. surely an all time great

After the dreary disappointing first Star Trek film, Star Trek2 The Wrath Of Khan was Ace (can we still say that). The first strayed way too far off the TV Episodes but the second used one of the best TV episodes and carried on the story. Never Bettered imo

Oh Aye and Spider Man2 was better than the first. Those Zombie Films got better as well i seem to remember

Sequels I would have liked to see

The Goonies II
Leon II (with Natalie Portman as a kick ass / cool as fuck assassin)
Ghostbusters III
Gremlins III
The Last Starfighter II

Blade Runner 2 could  be a great film as well. Radio Head would do a fantastic soundtrack

I coudn't agree more, in fact, my favourite Star wars film of all time is Star Wars 3 the 'death' of Anakin and the emergenance of Darth Vadar. Absolute Class!

I first saw Star Wars as an 18 yr old in Southern Calif... the audience all whooped and cheered and clapped ( a very strange experince in a cinema!) I was hooked for life.

what about the Pink Panther films?

Sheer Class!!!!!

(all except the last one)
Gopher

Laughing  Oh Aye

He said i'm gonna buy this place and burn it down,
I'm gonna put it six feet underground.
He said i'm gonna buy this place and watch it fall,
Stand here beside me baby in the crumbling walls.

Oh i'm gonna buy this place and start a fire,
stand here until I fill all your hearts desires.
Because i'm gonna buy this place and see it burn,
and do back the things it did to you in return.

He said i'm gonna buy a gun and start a war,
if you can tell me something worth fighting for.
Oh and i'm gonna buy this place is what i said.
Blame it upon a rush of blood to the head.

Said i'm gonna buy this place and see it go,
and stand here beside me baby, watch the orange glow.
Someone laughed, some just sit and cry.
She just sit down there and you wonder why.

So meet me by the bridge,
Meet me by the lane,
When am i gonna see, that pretty face again,
Oh meet me on the road,
meet me where i stand,
blame it all upon, a rush of blood to the head
