Red Riding

Anyone else watching this on Channel 4?

Saw the first epsiode this week (1974) and have to say that despite being very dark, it probably the best TV drama I've watched for a good few years. Stellar cast too with the cream of British acting talent. Oh, and Sean Bean too although I didn't reckon much to his attempt at a Yorkshire accent.... Wink

It's all been filmed in West Yorkshire too (the street I park on at work was in the first episode Very Happy ) so even if you don't fancy the story you can do a bit of location spotting.

Roll on this weeks showing of '1980'.

Bugger it, another show I missed

watched the first show and taped the second as we were in Val D'isere Wink

Found the first show brutal and had to look away sometimes....it was a tale of such despair.

The scene showing him driving over saddleworth on the old Todmorden road made me remember the journey to Scumchester pre-M62.

If anything the second episode (1980) is even darker than the first, but I'm absolutely hooked on it.

It satrts to weave in threads from the first episode and I can't wait for this weeks finale, 1983.

does this weeks episode return to the child abduction story of the first episode? I am sure the name of the girl mentioned in RT is same name.

Indeed - the trailer (and the actual conviction in the first episode, 1974) draw uncomfortable parallels with the Stefan Kishko (sp?) case, which was a truly shocking miscarriage of justice.
Although a work of fiction, much of the story is based around fact or factual events which gives it a very gritty edge and a definate sense of the times in which it is set.

Watched episode two last night.

Its the only time recently that I have been glued to the telly for two hours and not spoken in all that time.

Were West Yorks finest really that bad and corrupt? Shocked  Its a rhetorical question btw.

the last episode left me slightly confused. It was bit all over the place....I think I need to watch it again. Confused

Well I've just watched the last episode and must say that I thought the entire trilogy has been excellent, if very dark.

Clearly there is a degree of redemption at the end, but they could have shown the fall out surrounding events at the end.

Oh, and 'Fitzwilliam' with the power station behind it was actually filmed in Ferrybridge - there was a scene shot at the end of the in-laws street.  Cool

Thinking about it, to a point, less is more.

It often bugs me that you'll watch a drama and the ending / guilty party / twist in the tale, etc is so obvious you've worked it out half way through and they have to spend the last 10 minutes of screen time explaining everything. In that respect I think 'Red Riding' was a cut above as it left you thinking about what happened after the credits rolled.
