Mind the gap!

http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.c...ds-United-Mind-the-gap.5788673.jp

Robert Snodgrass has urged Leeds United to make themselves "impossible to catch after Christmas" after taking a stranglehold on the League One title race.

The winger is intent on supporting a powerful run of form through the final two months of the year with the aim of making United's position in their division virtually unassailable.

Leeds turned the screw with a 4-0 victory over Yeovil Town that stretched their advantage to seven points.

Snodgrass warned against any temptation to "crack open the champagne" with 15 games gone and more than 90 points still at stake, but the 22-year-old insisted United's priority should now be to widen the seven-point gap, rather than maintain it.

The Elland Road club have completed 15 league matches at the cost of only one defeat, and Simon Grayson's squad may have an immediate opportunity to extend their lead with second-placed Charlton due to host third-placed MK Dons when the league campaign restarts in a fortnight's time.

Snodgrass said: "If our form carries on like this, the worst-case scenario is that we're going to be in a similar position at Christmas. That's always a good time to take stock, regroup and then turn up the heat.

"The league's never won by Christmas but we need to approach the next two months with the aim of being almost impossible to catch after Christmas.

"A seven-point lead going into January isn't enough to guarantee you anything and the next step for us has to be to turn a good lead into a commanding one. We've got an opportunity to do that.

"It's stupid to get ahead of yourselves when you've got 30-odd games to go and almost 100 points to play for and the one thing you never do in football is crack open the champagne early. I wouldn't do that if we were in this position at the end of March so it's not going to happen now.

"But when you're at a club like this, you want to be a team that others are scared to play. I think that's starting to happen."

Leeds contest an FA Cup first-round tie against Oldham and a Johnstone's Paint Trophy quarter-final at home to Grimsby before resuming their league season away to Swindon on November 14, but the fixture at the County Ground could yet be postponed if United receive a flood of international call-ups.

Snodgrass is one of several players who may be involved in international friendlies the same weekend, and Scotland will confirm on Thursday morning whether he has been named in the squad for their meeting with Wales in Cardiff.
