Felipe Massa will not race in tomorrow's Hungarian Grand Prix after being knocked unconscious during a major accident in qualifying.
Word came through from Ferrari after a chaotic qualifying session that Massa would be undergoing surgery, having suffered "cuts on his forehead, damage to his skull and concussion."
The 28-year-old was struck by a piece of debris deposited by Rubens Barrichello's Brawn GP as he had earlier complained of something breaking at the back of his car.
Replays showed a part of the car coming off the Brawn and bouncing along the same area of the Hungaroring track where the drama began for Massa.
Massa later caught the debris, on one of his hot laps, which then bounced up, striking his helmet and knocking him unconscious.
Massa's feet must have relaxed at that point, one on the throttle as on-screen graphics showed it remained open, the other on the brake as there were skid marks across the considerable run-off area before he ploughed nose first into a tyre barrier.
The fact Massa made no attempt to turn out of the impact appeared to underline the fact he was not conscious as he hurtled into the tyres.
With Massa stricken in the car, photographs later emerged showing a fist-sized dent in his helmet, and with his visor up, there was a large cut over a blackened left eye.
Massa was soon attended to by trackside medics before being taken to the circuit's medical centre, then to hospital for further examination 22 minutes after his crash.
Looked very nasty - hope he's OK.

Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher could be set to make a shock return to Formula One as Ferrari look for a short-term replacement for the injured Felipe Massa.
Massa's condition has improved in the past 24 hours with doctors taking him out of a medically-induced coma on Monday night. While the news regarding Massa's condition continues to be encouraging, Ferrari are faced with the ask of finding a replacement driver. Ferrari's official spokesman, Luca Colajanni, has refused to rule out the possibility of 40-year-old Schumacher returning.
"We have said before that it is possible that Michael Schumacher could return to help us out," Colajanni told Press Association Sport.
In a best-case scenario doctors have said Massa will be out for six weeks, although there are still fears he may never return as a result of his injuries.
At the very least, Massa will certainly miss the European and Belgian Grands Prix at the end of August, although the current four-week break before the next race in Valencia gives the Italian team time to assess their options.
On the list of likely replacements could be Schumacher - who won five of his drivers' titles with Ferrari - after a spokeswoman for the German revealed on Tuesday he could be interested in a return despite his manager, Willi Weber, ruling out such a move at the weekend.
Colajanni continued: "We have two test drivers at Ferrari (Luca Badoer and Marc Gene) at the moment and Michael is an advisor.
"We have not spoken to him, but it is possible that this might happen.
"But we will have to wait and see what happens. It is something for (Ferrari team principal) Stefano Domenicali to consider over the coming weeks."

Well according to his doctors he could be out of hospital within 10 days and, while he is still of course in a life threatening situation as with any such injury, he's progressing well
