Lightspeed Champion

Went along to see current Indie/NME Darling Dev Hynes aka Lightspeed Champion Last Night at the Faversham. Don’t know much about him other than the odd Test Icicles stuff. His latest album is getting rave reviews so went to see what all the fuss is about. Answer is, not a lot really.

Funny place the Fav, with its Georgian splendour on the outside and modern clean chic inside. We used to dream about venues like this whilst traipsing around spit, bottles, spilt beer and sick during the 70s and 80’s. Despite all that The Cribs’ Hey Scenester always makes me think of the Fav and in a slightly disdainful way. I certainly don’t want to go back to those gigging days but there is something mildly disconcerting watching all the carefully assembled shabbiness of todays hip young things effortlessly displaying indifference to the music. Of course it’s every old buggers duty to put the younger generations down but these lot really do not know they are born Rolling Eyes .

Yer man himself was prominent at the front bobbing along to the support acts in an act of cool Indie solidarity. The fist band had some ridiculous predictive text joke name and ambled along in a likeable understated way. Their foppish local charm slid between meandering acoustic melodies pleasantly enough. The lasting impression of them though is Hugh Grant singing along to Gomez.

The Semi Finalists were next up joined by the man himself on Bass Guitar. Four or five slices of New Age Prog rock ensued and I swear I saw one of the crowd actually bob their head in appreciation. Good band though.

Then Mr Champion himself appeared a fashionable 25 minutes late muttering something about driving back down to London later on. He was ok but straight away his ordinary singing voice let him down. Something he as good as admitted himself.  His songs seemed like they could be growers but it was only when he was joined by the Semi Finalists that they acquired any live presence. Overall I reckon if the NME want a cool looking black Indie dude to champion they should stick with Kele from the Bloc Party. Very average.

Highlight of the night, two pints and a big sausage baguette and chips from the Library for under six quid. Now that is champion.
