The Northern Ireland international striker, who has one year left on his contract at Cardiff City, started his career at Elland Road and was on the books as a trainee from 1998 to 2001 – without ever actually playing a first-team game. But it looks like being a case of second time lucky for the Belfast-born ace, who is expected to hold talks with boss Simon Grayson early this week over the prospect of a permanent move. If all goes well the 28-year-old – well known to Whites' number two and Northern Ireland assistant boss Glynn Snodin – is expected to undergo a medical before the Whites' return to pre-season training on Thursday. League One rivals 'uddersfield Town, Norwich City and Charlton Athletic have also been linked with the nippy frontman. But the lure of a return to his first club is expected to tip the scales in United's favour. Feeney, a close friend of Harry Kewell during his time at Leeds – the pair were best man at each other's weddings – said: "Leeds are still a massive club and I'm excited. "I'm just going for talks and there is still plenty of things to discuss. A medical hasn't even been suggested. "Cardiff have given permission for another club to sign me, so we'll see what happens." Feeney notched six goals in 23 appearances during a season-long loan spell at SPL outfit Dundee United last season, but the Terrors are not thought to be in a position to press ahead for a full-time move, especially after the collapse of Setanta. Feeney, capped 31 times by his country, has scored five times, including the only goal of the game in a 1-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Slovenia in April. Meanwhile, newly-promoted Premiership outfit Burnley are the latest club to be linked with a move for transfer-listed United striker Jermaine Beckford. |

Journeyman striker who has done the best with very limited ability. Not very quick, not great in the air, not specially skilful, not a prolific goalscorer and not able to hold down a regular first team place at his last few clubs.
Except for adding an experienced body to the squad, I don't see what else he has to contribute. His presence in the first team certainly wouldn't improve it. He does seem to be the sort of player Grayson likes though. |

Possibly both. He didn't sign too many exciting players at Blackpool either, though of course they didn't have any money to spend. I suspect that's a big factor in why he got the job in the first place. However, whether it's Bates' decision of Grayson's is largely irrelevant. As a barometer of the club's footballing ambitions it speaks volumes. |

Yay, the now traditional Leeds United and Waccoe 'we didn't pay any money/he hasn't done well at a higher level so he must be utter sh*te' moan has made it onto here as well.

Lets not forget Henry was an after thought beofre wnger bought him. I feel that a lot of these argument are purely anti Bates, rather than actual footballer comments. Regardless of who we buy / get some will not be happy until Bates is no longer on the scene. Bout time to get over one's self me thinks!! | ||||||

It's nowt to do with Bates. I've never rated Feeney, that's all. Just because we might sign him does not suddenly mean the slate should be wiped clear and I should see him as a potential star.
Sure, I'm not convinced Bates cares about the footballing side of the club much. but that's because of his record at Chelsea before Harding got on board. In those days Chelsea were at best a yo-yo club and Bates changed the manager once a year for about 10 years. I see no evidence that he's changed his spots at Leeds. As for the comparisons with Henry...

Do you think I'm comparing Henry? Really? Can you not see that it was an example of a player being a non entity at one club, under a particualr manager and how much that player changes under different circumstances????
I suppose the comments re-Grayson are just in case he does bomb out you can always say "I told you so" eh? Also, lets not lose sight that LUAFC is a third div team these days, FACT!! Do some really expect us to attracte Premiership players ,just cos we is Leeds? Really? Still, we is Leeds and we should automatically be in the prem, just cos we are Leeds. |

All off now anyway - if it was ever actually on.
Larry was on Radio Leeds this afternoon saying that Feeney was "one of about 10" players that they'd been speaking to, but in his case they'd decided not to take it any further at this stage. So, what went on there then?

Beats me. Apparently our main competitors for Feeney were... Grimsby! If it's off, I'm very pleased. If we have any ambition to get out of this division, we must try and sign better players than this, or at least someone with the potential to get better. At his age, Feeney does not fall into the category of "player with great potential". |

Not really, no. Henry was much younger, was seen as a player of great potential in France until he moved to Juve, and then he floundered. Wenger signed him, changed his position and turned him into a superstar. Feeney is at the peak of his career already, and has now been largely anonymous for several clubs ever since he left Bournemouth. The two just don't compare in any respect.
No, I really hope he succeeds, but I do think his Leeds background made Bates believe he'd be given more latitude by fans even if we didn't get promoted, while his Blackpool record showed that he was someone used to managing with little or no financial support, just what Bates wants. In terms of signings, we are yet to see how Grayson does. Naylor and Sodje were good choices, Trundle and Dickinson bad ones while Grella remains unproven one way or the other.
Never said that, but the question is this: do we belong at this level? If we do, you are right and we should limit our ambitions to third tier players. Otherwise we must seek to do better. You don't progress by aiming to stand still! |
