Leeds Town and Country Club back
from YEP
By Paul Robinson
A DISUSED Leeds nightclub is going back to the future when it is transformed into a major live music venue.
The old Creation club, on Cookridge Street near Millennium Square, has been taken over by the London-based Academy Music Group (AMG
Bosses at AMG plan to carry out a full refurbishment of the grade-one listed building before re-opening it next September as a Carling Academy concert hall.
The proposed changes are in keeping with the history of the site, which was the home of the much-missed Town & Country Club between 1992 and 2000.
During that time it staged gigs by star names such as David Bowie, Robbie Williams and Blur.
AMG operates a chain of Carling Academy live music and club venues in cities such as Birmingham, Glasgow, Newcastle and Liverpool.
Its presence in London includes the Shepherds Bush Empire and the Carling Academy Brixton.
Today, the company's chief executive officer, John Northcote, told the YEP: "I used to go to the Town & Country Club, so I know what a big hole it left in the Leeds music scene when it closed.
"That makes this project something of a labour of love for me."
The Carling Academy Leeds will boast a main hall capable of holding at least 2,000 people.
It will also have a 400-capacity room for gigs by up-and-coming bands.
Refurbishment work is due to get under way in February. AMG's takeover marks a new chapter in the story of a building which has undergone successive transformations since it first opened in 1885.
Originally known as the Coliseum in its early years, it hosted everything from circus shows to political meetings.
From the 1930s it was used as a cinema, bingo hall and even a television studio before becoming the Town & Country Club.
Creation opened in 2001 following a £7m redevelopment of the site but closed in February this year.
AMG has acquired the lease on the venue from Luminar, Britain's largest nightclub operator.

Great News
Bradford is non existent now as a venue, Sheffield is a pig to get to and back. Reasons for going to Scumchester are getting less and less. Untill we get back in the Prem

Great news.
Leeds has been crying out for something like this since, well since the T&C closed.
