I considered posting this in the Random Irritations thread, but eventually decided it merited a thread all of it's own.

The educational collosus formerly known as Leeds Polytechnic, now known as Leeds Metropolitan University is really getting my goat.

First there was the sponsorship of Headingley Rugby Stadium, then sponsoring the perrenial relegation fodder formerly known as the Leeds Tykes, under their "sporting brand" Leeds Carnegie.

Then we find them sponsoring the World Club Championship game betwixt the Hippo's and some Aussies (sorry, can't remember who now) on two occassions.

Now in t'YEP we find them again chucking the sponsorship money about with more gay abandon, this time for the redevelopment of the cricket stadium side of Headingley. Especially the "iconic" new bit that looks like a 1970's lampshade.

Now if this was a commercial company doing this, I couldn't give two hoots.

But as an educational establishment, most if not all of their funding comes from our taxes in one form or another. If they have any spare cash to flash can I suggest that iether they plough it back into teaching students, or perhaps they are simply getting too much in the way of subsidy? The way this money is being chucked about concerns me greatly.
We are talking tens of millions of £'s here.

It is not, nor should it ever be, the role of an educational establishment that relies on public handouts to sponsor commercial enterprises. In fact, shouldn't it be the other way round?

The Met is one of, if not the, richest uni's in the country, they have money thrown at them, its the reason they are the only uni that offers a fee of 2k a year rather than that maximum 3K that the University of Leeds and everyone else charge, and despite that they are also one of the worst uni's in the country.

I can not see how them throwing money at Leeds Tykes and YCCC is ethical at all.. firstly surely that money should go on the students, and secondly as they are such a poor uni they could use the money to improve their standards.

Also they sponser the World Club Challenge and the Challenge Cup. Its ridiculous.

and then their students go and graffiti our uni constantly

some enterprising soul managed to graffiti the side of the Parkinson buildings tower abover the line of the roof last year

graffiti is a luxury over here.

i love the students though especialy freshers week.. what a great time to go into leeds through the week and pass urself off as a student and get cheep drinks

They want to ban freshers weeks cause they lead to binge drinking and problems in cities

although i honestly didnt do a lot during freshers week, it would be a shame.

what i remembered before i went away but forgot to post was to say that added to the fact that its immoral for a uni to give money away like that, Leeds Met Student Union went bankrupt earlier this accademic year, I think that says summut about how wrong it is
