FA Cup 1955 - 1956

Just been to see a relative, and she produced and gave me a match day programme for the FA Cup 3rd round tie between Leeds and Cardiff City. She went to the match, and remembers Leeds lost 2 - 1.

Leeds team, as per programme:

Wood
Dunn
Hair
Gibson
Charlton
Kerfoot
Williams
Brook
Charles
Vickers
Overfield

Pretty sure we got promoted to D1 that season so who needs a cup run Smile . Nice bit of memorabilia anyhow. Smile
weasel

The second goal was offside.

I was at the game (as was Ozwhite) and it was one of the three successive 3rd round Cup ties all against Cardiff all at ER that ended 2-1 to the Welshmen!!

And yes we did get promoted that season with a 4-1 ;ast game win at Dull

How could we ever forget!

Before the humiliation of Colchester, Sunderland, Cardiff and the like while we were still the easybeats of the FA Cup, even the odds of getting beat at Elland Road by the same team, by the same score at Elland Road three years on the trot were in the millions-to-one.

Saw all three games, as did JJ, and never deserved to win one of them! It was defeats like these that steeled me against future disasters, which came with monotonous regularity and made the years of success even sweeter!

The three games are featured in LUFC Greatest Games

Is that Williams, Billy Williams? If so I work with his daughter! Just found out last Thursday! I thought it was a good omen.

I don't know. The programme only gives surnames. Think it may have been Harold Williams (a winger according to my books).....You would need an answer from one of the senior forum members

I can assure that it was indeed Harold 'Taffy' Williams who was a pint sized left or right winger and a big mate of 'Big John' (and if you dont know who he is then you shouldn't call yerself a LUFC fan!!!). My mum alwayd reckond that he only ever played one really good game at ER and that was for Newport County against us after which we signed him!!!!

He ran a well known pub in Beeston (so well known I have forgotten its name - Tommy Wass's????) after he retired and he was good cricketer playing for Holdbeck when they had the ground behind the now East Stand.

He lost his place in the team when we signed Georgie Meek and Jacky Overfield came through the ranks (both wingers).

He probably still goes to ER - I saw him there just before Charles died a couple of years ago now

Aye John lad!

There was an Andy Williams, a Gary Williams and even a John Williams who played for Leeds but never a Billy Williams, but it was definitely the one and only Welsh Wizard of the wing, "Twinkletoes" himself, Harold "Taffy" Williams of the size five and a half boots and the ability to dribble, shoot and cross with either foot. I think your mum does the Welsh wizard an injustice, John, and I saw him play many a fine game for United. He did have the infuriating habit of wanting to beat the opposing full back at least three times before getting his cross in, which was a little better than Georgie Meek who wanted to beat each member of the opposition five times before centreing!

There have been a lot worse winger than "Twinkletoes" play for United and by 1955-56 he had given six or seven years of service and entertainment, survived a broken leg, and landed many a centre plumb on the head of the Gentle Giant!

He had the Railway Pub at Beeston and also a pub in Gildersome and for years, after they retired from football, he and his two firm friends John Charles and Jimmy Dunn could be seen close to where the old players' entrance used to be, at most home games, until fairly recent times when unfortunately his two amigos passed away. They could be seen chewing the cud and making friends with anyone who wished to make their acquaintance. Lads from the old school! Could not see the modern lot doing the same! Rolling Eyes  Wink
