Education Education Education

Well my son got dumped by the system yesterday because he was 1 point under. He has had an awful year emotionally, and has carried some very serious burdens that I would have struggled with, and certainly not  that a 16 year old should have been carrying  (not of our making, and not of our knowledge until too late).

Despite this he turned in an A, 2 B's and 5 C's.The system is crap. We were asked to appeal and when we got there the meeting was a sham. The decision had been made - that was clear - they were covering their arses. For the record, my son is compassionate, kind, gentle, caring, loyal and lazy.....He is not some kind of ASBO truant disruptive bully. We were left with 1/2 a day to find an establishment to take him in.

They put 100% of the blame on my son, but when I questioned their short falls, I got silence and no eye contact. How can a predicetd A go to an E in a few weeks? How can a school justify getting through science teachers like they were going out of fashion and yet expect the pupils to remain consistant?

So the Tories have lost my vote for ever (like they give a toss around here). A 16 year old boy is left feeling like a failure and a reject, despite achieving over the national average.

I am so proud of my son for being the person he is, and for achieving as much as he did given the pressures he was under, and the system said fuck off........And why? because he is a risk to their percentage points and funding......What the fuck....Tossers

As someone who should have done better in my GCSE's (for reasons we won't go into here) I understand a little of what you are experiencing.

Teachers are now only interested in achieving set targets and teaching what the government tells them. It's one of the reasons that my sister (a qualified teacher) works overseas and swears she will never work in the UK state system.
Teachers also have no accountability. It's like many state funded jobs where mediocracy is not only welcomed but encouraged. Better to consistently maintain the required minimum than to attempt to inspire or achieve. One size fits all edukayshun.

Through a combination of hard work, support, years of study after work
and a little luck I've achieve a decent standard and obtained professional qualifications - if I can do it I'm damn sure your lad can (his GCSE results are already better than mine!)

I wish you and all your family the best.

Its getting that way over here too. The teachers Union and the Pollies dont want published the lists of how well (or not) schools are performing. Says it will disadvantage the students ???!!!???

I have a neice and a nephew in the countryside, one planning to be a pysiotherapist and the other a PE teacher (they are in the Australian squad for Rugby!!!) After getting above average marks over the last 2 years of school, their end results (which is calculated over those last 2 years) ensured one is now a builders labourer and the other a receptionist

Gotta feel for ya mate

What system kicks a kid out for getting that?

I went to a public school and all you needed to get into the 6th form was 5 GCSE's at A-C FFS

As I was reminded in an unrelated conversation today, "Those who can't, teach"
