Da Costa loan?Wise: Da Costa may go on loan
Filipe Da Costa
By Phil Hay
Leeds United are considering sending Filipe Da Costa out on loan in an effort to adapt the Portuguese winger to life in the English leagues.
Da Costa has not featured in United's squad since his straight red card against Bury last month, and Dennis Wise will look for possible opportunities for him when the transfer window opens next month after admitting the 23-year-old is not ready for a sustained run in United's first team.
United signed Da Costa on a free transfer and a one-year deal in August but his short spell at Elland Road has been a story of disruption.
Disagreements over his availability and claims by Greek club Ionikos that Da Costa was still under contract with them when he signed for Leeds delayed the arrival of international clearance from FIFA, and his dismissal against Bury brought a costly end to his first start in a United shirt.
Da Costa was sent off after 42 minutes of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy quarter-final and his resulting three-match suspension has given Wise time to consider the ex-Benfica winger's immediate future.
Wise said: "You won't see a huge amount of him at the moment. Filipe needs to learn the English game and he hasn't quite got to grips with it.
"I'm actually thinking about sending him on loan to get games under his belt. He's blessed with so much ability but he's got to work for the team, and do the right things for the team.
"I'm not prepared to have luxuries – people who only play when they've got the ball. He understands that and I'm not knocking him.
"But I can't take a chance on him and he found that out a couple of weeks ago when he did something he shouldn't have.I need players I can rely on, and who you know will do the job that you send them out to do.
"He needs to understand the English game and you only get that by playing. In the position that we're in, it's difficult to give him a chance or teach him while he goes along."
Wise, meanwhile, revealed that Tresor Kandol has been fined by Leeds after his show of dissent against Huddersfield Town on Saturday incurred his fifth booking of the season and a one-match ban.
Kandol will miss tomorrow's game at Walsall and Wise said: "He kept getting pushed and whacked, but he's got to learn to take that.
"It's cost him by not playing, and it's cost him in his pocket as well. I learned that lesson and it cost me a fortune. I got sent off four times in one season and paid God-knows how much. It's not funny.
"I understand he was frustrated, but this is where he can become a better player."

Reckon this could be a good idea, let someone else play and train him till he's ready..

Fair play to Wise on both accounts
I agree about Da Costa - he looked to have bags of ability but if he is pechulant then he is a liability PLUS if he doesn't work for the team then I would like to see him improve before risking him again.
as for kandol i almost posted my annoyance last week when he picked up a needless booking for dissent - we were 3/4 goals up so why do it?? Good to see that he is getting fined IMHO
Long live Wise (almost )
Seriously though - he has come on alot since last season and I agree that his test will be next season when we (should) get promoted. He has certainly come out saying the right things this season (football league points, great start, billy bremner statue incident) as opposed to last season when he appeared to not have a clue
Time will tell.................
