Jeremy Clarkson is like Marmite - you either love him or loathe him.

But today he's in hot water for making what appears to be a factually correct statement.

(from the bbc) The controversial presenter compared Mr Brown to Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, shortly after Mr Rudd had addressed the country on the severity of the global financial crisis.

Clarkson said: "He [Rudd] genuinely looked terrified. The poor man, he's actually seen the books.

"[In the UK] we've got this one-eyed Scottish idiot.

"He keeps telling us everything's fine and he's saved the world and we know he's lying, but he's smooth at telling us."

Lets look at this more closely.
Gordon Brown is Scottish - that is a fact.
He's also one-eyed - another fact.
He keeps telling us everything is fine - fact
He did say he'd saved the world - fact
He's smooth at telling us the above - New Labours spin machine is very slick - a fact.
Most people suspect he's lying which comes from a wider distrust of politicians in general and New Labour ones in particular - appears fairly factual.

So the only bit under scrutiny is that Gordon Brown is an idiot. On which point I agree with Clarkson. I suspect that we are not the only people in the world who share this opinion.

Clarkson also forget to mention that Brown is unelected and presided over 10 years of 'boom' as Chancellor, yet appears to have left us totally unprepared for the current economic crisis.

As you say, Clarkson is like Marmite, and I don't like Marmite. But the man has spoken some truths, and IMO this is a non story drummed up by a struggling Labour spin regime to further deflect the public from the disaster that they have inflicted upon us.

Clarkson is a wankwer of the highest order, imho of course. He may have told the truth, but did so to gain the publicity to keep him topical, a la Brand, Ross etc.

Only Yorkshire person born on the wrong side of the pennines imo..
