CapelloI hope this will prove to be a good appointment but what a sad state of affairs again for English football that we have to look elsewhere for a manager. Suppose when you consider the possibilities the cupboard is bare...Allardyce?? Redknapp..maybe O'Neill...Irish Curbishley...Did well for Charlton but not up to it I don't think.
Still, got to admit I'm not that bothered really because, for me, club before country every time. I would have preferred to see us win the Johnstone's above England winning a trophy

i have been to many internationals in my time under several different managers, and not since the days of Gascoigne, Butcher, Ince, Pearce, Hoddle, Waddle, Seamen, Shearer, and a few others, do we have anyone what plays for the pride of there country no more ? No i am afraid its all about money, advertising, merchandising and buissness !!

Absolutely agree with this post - no one cares for the "shirt" anymore - no matter how many times the players "say" they are proud to play for their country
On another note - the appointment of a foreign coach again - I was watching (or listening) to an ex england player the other day (can't remember who) and they said that it should be a national coach from that country (i.e. English) otherwise you might as well start having foreign forwards playing in the team as well - which when he put it like that made a lot of sense as you have a team that is supposed to represent your country by having players who are born / nationalised in that country so why not coaches?? It shouldn't matter that you can't find a "good" one you should be made to pick an English Manager

Probably the best candidate available and willing to take the job.
Still won't alter the fact the pool of players he has to select from are a bunch of lazy overpaid primadonnas with attitude problems, or simply aren't good enough.
Apparently he's insisted on appointing his own backroom staff, including the goalkeeping coach. Thats one good decision already then.

I don't see the problem with having a foreign coach of a national team. Sports people are only playing sport for money anyway.

thing is:
1. Prem is allegedly 'best' league in the world
2. Top managers in Prem are not English
3. Most players in top clubs in prem aren't English (ie, Arsenal rarely field an englishman and have a french manager)
4. they say players chosen should come from champions league teams - all foriegn managers and few English players.
My view is that the league has to be having an effect on the national team, with a decreasing amount of englishmen getting the required experience to play and lead at that level. Few, if any, englishmen play abroad so don't get experience that way like all the other national teams.
Capello wanted the job. That in itself is a bonus. He has dealt with the press in both Italy and Spain, if you can do that you must have balls of steel!
Good luck to him. Hope he puts pride back into the national squad. Hope he chooses players on merit and not for the name, remember this is the guy who dropped 'golden balls Beckham' (who must be wondering if he will get his 100th cap now  )
(And he's Italian  )

In all seriouness (no joking or sarcasm), was he really? I just don't view him that way.
To me he was a fat, petulant, lard-arse, lazy boy who only turned it on when he wanted to, which was a feckin shame to his talent. He is now doing the same at Toon.
I view Viduka as a man who sadly has not reached his potential. Please correct me if I am wrong, I am ready to stand corrected.

I think Viduka was one of the best strikers Leeds United have ever had....
That said I also think he was a lazy moody twat of a player who could have been EVEN BETTER but couldn't be arsed or motivated enough to push himself.
His record at Leeds was outstanding and when he COULD be arsed he was one of the best strikers in the league

Never in a million years did I think a fella with his credentials and reputation would take the job. Fair play to the FA they have got the best manager around but Why oh why as he taken the job. Surely not the money? . Maybe some Italian pride, judging by the gloating in the Italian press but FFS it’s a rum do when I find mesen agreeing with Paul Ince about not having an English Manager. Tragic
This is surely the last throw of the dice for them and the national team. No one is beyond reproach but if we don’t achieve then surely we’ve got to stop looking at the manger. If these over hyped twats can’t play to their best, let alone raise their game playing for their country AND the worlds best manager we’d better get Keegan back  .

Viduka - Leeds United took him from mini league to major league. He skulked and sulked his way through it. Yes he scored . Nothing more than should have been expected. When the chips were down he was a loser for himself and club. I would rather have Smith or Bowyer back at ER than than him.

I wonder who Paul Mince had in mind? Himself perhaps, the self styled "Guv'nor" and current boss of the mighty MK Dons? A player with limited talent who made up for this with an over inflated opinion of his own self importance and a stunning ability to go missing when needed (penalty shootout against the Germans in Euro'96, anyone?).
Perhap Alan Curbishley, or that nice David Moyes? FFS, McLaren only got the job because the press scared off Big Phil and the FA were desperate for an English manager after the Sven fiasco.
