Bishopesses

So what’s the big deal with allowing Women to be bishops? Why not.
Im no Expert on religious organizations so why are certain elements of the Anglican Church ready to defect to the Catholic church over it. Hasn’t the CoE always moved with the times? Isnt that why Big Henry created it in the first place.

The world is crying out for spiritual authority and guidance more than ever and all our lot can do is fratch over technicalities. Is it any wonder ordinary people are abandoning the church when all they can see is wazzocks poncing about talking crap and not addressing real important issues

I may be wrong, but didn't the CofE come about because the Pope wouldn't give Henry VIII a divorce? It's hardly the most auspicious basis for a new branch of Christianity, is it?

And perhaps people are abandoing organised religion because it's repeatedly failing to provide a solid consistent foundation, preferring to run around seeking whatever Politically Correct mantra is in favour this year?
When you have the head of the CofE stating that Sharia Law should be allowed in the UK, you have to question his judgement and suitability for the role.

Christian population throughout the world is growing and not shrinking. So ordinary people around the world are coming to churches and not aboandoning them.

I have no idea what the issues are in C of E, but it may be based on interpretation of scripture, and perhaps that interpretation concluding that spiritual leaders should be male.

Personally I don't care. Was not brought up a Christian, or with any spiritual leaning, and denomination is irrelevant to me. It is the fundamental beliefs that are important.

As with all things, people will focus on what is in the news, focus on the bad, deride blanket fashion.

C of E is just a branch of Christian following. What about the Methodists? the Baptists? The Catholics?......How about a mention for the hundreds of thousands of volunteers out there working in slums, providing health and education at the cost of their own careers and comforts? A mention for those working on our streets, providing refuge for beaten wives, young pregant mothers, drug addicts, advisce for debt and gambling issues. Respite for carers of sick and disabled. Lunch clubs and day centres for the elderly and infirm.

No....Forget it....Let's just roll it all up in one ill considered ball, and have a general blanket slag off religion and religious leader thread.

That was not my intention (if indeed that comment was in response to my earlier post). I would not for a minute decry the many good works that go on everyday and which are seldom deemed newsworthy.

I am sure not. But if there is a "world crying out for spiritual guidance" the statistics suggest that much of the world is finding it. Others perhaps, are either not looking, which is their choice, or may be looking in the traditional places, and in doing so, the wrong places for their needs.

Not 100% sure what you’re getting at their Garp. When I say the world is crying out for  guidance I mean with all the immorality (Christian immorality), decadence and plain sinning shouldn’t the CoE be playing a prominent part in trying to promote and re assert these values. Clearly big business and governments do not seem to be interested in it therefore the only influential body left is the church. From what I can see all they are interested in protecting in is a self perpetuating power base as NE1 alluded to.

Are you implying that more and more people are joining the church or finding religion? It doesn’t appear to be the case from what I can see but I am ready to admit im not looking in the right places

It does worry me even though I am an organised religion sceptic that Christianity is becoming more and more marginalised and it seems to be doing nothing about that other than internally debating philosophical technicalities which are ultimately meaningless to most people as in this women bishop issue. I’m all for individuals finding enlightenment in whatever way they can but if we are going to have a body to represent them i think that body should be doing more to address the problems of the world.

What is "The Church"?

More people than ever are finding religion, and Christianity is the fastet growing religion in the world. Do a bit of Google research, some will say nearly neck and neck with Islam, most will say Christianity is growing fastest.

I can't get this fixation with C of E, or for that matter the Catholic tradition.....I respect peoples religious beliefs, with proviso it is based on love and peace, and I respect the right of the individual to worship in an environment that they find comfortable.  But there are a lot more options and choices out there. The problem is, in my view, that many of us are not looking (and that is choice), and therefore consider mainstream, as reported in the news, as the only thing on offer.

If all I had available to me was C of E and Catholic, then at the time I would not have chosen my faith.

There is a vibrant and alive Christian movement in this country. It does not get on the news, because what it is doing is good news, and good news is not news worthy.....I aint an Evangelist, but it is out there for those who want, and for those who don't, God bless.  Smile  Wink
