One of the leaders of the last protests (in 2000, I think) has been interviewed and said he and others were prepared to take action, but that new legislation introduced to combat global terror is worded in such a way as they could be locked up as terrorists.
Another example of a supposedly left-wing governments totalitarian crusade against civil liberties, or not? You decide.
Personally I loved the last lot of protests. I filled up the day it kicked off on the way to work (had to wait 10 minutes for a free pump mind) and there was no petrol to be found by the time I set off home. We then had a week with bugger all traffic on the roads - it was bliss. And from a less selfish point of view it showed just how many people don't actually need to make so many trips in their cars.
The rolling roadblocks on the M62 were impressive too. I managed to nip on at Chain Bar just in front of one and for the rest of my journey people were waving and cheering off bridges and I had the road to myself. Marvellous!
Then as luck would have it the garage up the road got a delivery just before I drove past, so I immediately pulled into the queue and filled up again, helped by a very nice police lady who was there to ensure fair do's and no pushing in. You would be surprised how many people tried. Tut tut!
The bad news is that now the £1.00 a litre barrier has been broken it's been going up every few days. My local Tesco is now charging 105.9p/litre for diesel and analysts reckon it could hit 120p by the end of the year...still, it's a lot cheaper than a pint down the pub! |
