I am sure that we all agree that the crime of rape is one of the worst crimes a human can commit against another....So I hope we have no need to debate that one.

Re: The Man Utd player being held......Ok...Let's try to forget for 1 minute that  he is "scum" and filth and deserves whatever he gets, guilty or not.......What if they have got the wrong man? What if it goes to court, and he is found not guilty? How do you think he is going to be treated by fans, the media? Is there ever a circumstance where the victim as well as the accused should be given anonymity?

I feel sorry for they guy! I am not condoning rape by any means, but had she been flirting, coming on to the guy all night, taking drinks off him then gone to the room with him then realised she could make some money out of this cos of who he plays for. Was this really an act of rape or some scheming women trying to hit the head lines.

The one thing we can all be sure of is that we don't know the full facts. That is what the police investigation is there to establish and, if necessary, present before a judge and jury.

However, this lad is going to be the subject of abuse from the terrace as a result of the accusation regardless of the outcome. If he's innocent then how can that be right?

It is only right that the assaulted party has the right to anonimity - we are talking about a horrendous crime and the victim should be protected, but that anonimity should be extended to the accused as well.
Is it not a basic premise of English law that you are innocent until proved guilty?
I seem to remember a case a couple of years back when a very well known singer was accused of rape and it was splashed all over the media. Within a week the accuser had been established as nothing more than a fantasist and there was no evidence of any crime - funnily this got hardly any coverage, but the tale was out there and mud sticks.

As I've said, I'm far from knowing the full facts, but it will be interesting to see if the victims story appears in one of the Sundays this weekend, via a friend, as has previously happened

That said though, if he is found guilty after a trial, then the full force of the law must be brought to bear.

This is always the case with rape cases

Look at Craig Charles - he will always have a stigma attached to him regardless of the fact that it was a totally fabricated story. It was splashed all over the headlines for a few days and then when he was acquitted it appeared on page 5 (bottom right)

Personally I think that both victim and accused must be given full anonimity from the start

No comment from me till a full police investigation is completed, and he is judged by his peers, at the moment he is innocent of any wrongdoing, until the guilt is proven, Has the presumption of innocence until found guilty, been abandoned in the UK ?

No - but the stigma of just being "accussed" can ruin some people - which is what pisses me off so much about these cases - if found guilty chop the twats balls off and make him eat them  Evil or Very Mad

If the boy did it, then he should be properly processed through the legal system. And of course the young woman should be given full protection, counselling and justice.

But, he has not even be brought to trial yet, let alone be tried, and his name and face is all over the press. Whether or not he is charged and tried, his life is in ruins at the moment.
