We were in Wetherby today and happened upon a shop selling "energy saving" lightbulbs at a very reasonable price. So we bought two.
Got then home and the first one works fine - the second one only partially lights up and even after several minutes is only about as bright as a scum fan, ie not very...
So, my point is:
I now have to traipse all the way to Wetherby to change the faulty bulb - how is this reducing my carbon footprint? Not to mention the precious fossil fuels that will be burnt during the journey there and back.
The energy expended by doing this is more than if I'd walked the half mile to Tesco's and bought and old fashioned bulb and used that for the next two years!
Can I insist that, as well as replacing the bulb, the shop off-set my carbon emissions in returning the bulb by planting some trees or something? |

You should have bought 4 and returned the faulty one when next in Wetherby
Don't Tesco sell energy efficient bulbs? |

Indeed they do - but not at 39p each for Philips 11w (100w equivalent) ones.
I wonder if thats what that slogan means -
More (carbon emissions) for you for less (expensive non-working lightbulbs) |

But then I'm 39p down and have an ill-illuminated kitchen.
There is a principle here you know. |

So, I'm sorry but if it comes down to a choice between the polar bears and my money, it's bye bye whitey |
