An angry Simon Grayson accused a number of his players of short-changing Leeds United's supporters after the club struggled through their Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie with Darlington.
United's manager warned certain members of his squad that they had cast doubt over their future involvement at Elland Road following an unconvincing performance last night. A weakened Leeds side reached the quarter-finals of the Trophy's northern section with a 2-1 victory over the club ranked 92nd in the Football League, but Grayson refused to overlook the mediocre standard of his team's display.
The 39-year-old was beset by injuries and international call-ups ahead of the second-round tie and made six changes to the line-up used against Charlton Athletic on Saturday, but he was frustrated by the nervous second half his side were forced to endure despite establishing a 2-0 lead inside 28 minutes.
A crowd of just under 8,500 supporters attended the fixture in pouring rain at Elland Road, and Grayson said: "I don't care if it's a JPT game or a Champions League game – I've got high standards and people know what I expect of my team.
"I'm hugely disappointed with certain individuals and a lot of the players didn't do themselves any justice. You'd have to ask them why that was.
"Regardless of me changing the team, it was an opportunity to play in front of 9,000 fans who've paid good money to come and watch us. Players get paid decent money to put in performances and work hard, and when they get a chance they should be making me say 'I can't drop you' or 'I can't leave you out of my future plans'. Not many of them have done that.
"I'm happy that we've gone through and I'm pleased with certain players who kept the team together, but others let themselves down.
"We could have given the fans some entertainment and given them something to shout about. Unfortunately, most of the crowd probably ended up fast asleep during the second half."
Andy Robinson and Tresor Kandol gave Leeds the initiative with goals in the opening half-hour, but United's dominance subsided and Darlington fought their way back into the game with a goal from Mark Convery shortly before half-time.
Kandol's strike – his first senior goal for Leeds since May 2008 – was brilliantly taken but the striker was substituted at the interval after succumbing to illness on an evening which further increased United's selection problems.
Grayson was already without six injured players before Darlington's visit and American striker Davide Somma has been added to that list after straining a hamstring on his first-team debut last night.
Leeds were hoping for positive results today having sent Argentinian forward Luciano Becchio for another X-ray on his damaged ankle.
Grayson is hopeful that Becchio is not suffering from any broken bones, saying: "We're probably looking at ligament damage more than anything else but it needs another scan and an X-ray. It'll probably take 24 or 48 hours before we know the full extent of it."
The quarter-finals of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy are due to be staged during the week commencing November 9, and Grayson insisted he was determined to see Leeds reach the latter stages of the competition.
"However many changes I made, I've still got a good enough squad to progress in it," he said. "We'll try to get to Wembley and win it."
Good sentiment from the gaffer - lets hope the players take heed.
