Good race I thought.
Brawn GP claimed yet another victory in the final European race of the season at Monza. Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button took first and second position after a tense Italian Grand Prix, as the Englishman scored his first podium finish in six races. The Brawn duo used a superior one-stop strategy to overhaul the two-stopping Lewis Hamilton. Barichello cut Button’s Championship lead by another two points to 14 as the season draws to an exciting climax.
Hamilton had a decent start from pole but was overtaken by the Brawns when he made his first stop. He eventually crashed out on the last lap while desperately trying to challenge Button for second position, and was classified 12th.
The accident promoted Kimi Raikkonen to a surprise podium finish for Ferrari. Force India’s Adrian Sutil harried Raikkonen all the way but had to make do with fourth place, the best result of his young F1 career.
It was a bad weekend for Red Bull and their title rivals Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. The race saw Webber crash on the first lap and Vettel finishing eighth. Both drivers are now more than 25 points behind Button and their title hopes now look slim.
Giancarlo Fisichella hoped to repeat his performance from the last race as he climbed into Felipe Massa’s Ferrari, but failed to deliver, finishing ninth. The Italian said he was satisfied with the result, and had been gaining pace as the weekend progressed, but admitted he was not up to speed yet.
