Yes. And I am pretty sure I saw on the news that it was all done for £25,000. OK £25k is a nice wedge, but is it really worth the amount of trouble they have been through? Let alone that which is to come. May be for £2.5 million......But £25k Shocked

If it is a "mere" £25k, then I for one am appalled at the effort that plod are putting into it.

The only entity to suffer a loss is the insurance company, who under normal circumstances would be told to take a running jump by the boys in blue (don't forget I work for an insurance company and my experience is that the police generally couldn't give a shite how much has been defrauded, even when you have cast iron 100% proof). It's almost always left to the insurer to take action through the civil courts or  for them to have to agree to cover all prosecution costs to get the matter dealt with by the authorities in a criminal court.

It's a shame all these bobbies, (particularly fairly high ranking ones) are getting themselves on the news and in the papers over this mildly amusing and somewhat odd story. How soon before Carruthers of the Yard and company gets on a business class flight to Panama for some "background checks"?

If the police have this amount of resources to throw at this, can I suggest that they'd be better employed elsewhere, such as keeping gangs of feral kids off the streets or locking up drug dealers.

Couldn't agree more with that Ravey - I once worked for an insurance company and we got ripped off to the tune of £2 million quid from dodgy insurance policies that had been set up and commission paid on - don't recall a) the police even getting involved & b) it making any form of media coverage  Rolling Eyes

I have also known of several £1 million + claims that took place within weeks of the policies being taken out AND being paid out on - another con and again a) & b) never happening.

As usual utter waste of resources - cost more in man power than "gaining" anything back.

PS I also worked for an insurance company that had Personal Accident insurance for Roberto Di Matteo - paid out to the tune of £4.5 million  Shocked

Understand all that, but I doubt if it was a "mere" £25K - as a serving prison officer, his Death in sevice benefit would probably been at least double that, plus the mortgage on the 2 houses they had as a B&B.

Anyway it's all relative - They were apparently deep in the financial mire - if it meant they could not only not lose their houses, but also have a good standard of living afterwards, plenty of people would take substantial risks for that.

30 mill - people sometimes "suspect" they have something wrong with them but haven't been to the doctors for years and up until that point have had a reasonable / good bill of health - so before they go and see a doctor about their concerns they take out the highest amount of critical illness cover they can without going over the underwriting thresholds that would apply at their age (this is easy information to find out from life company reps or financial advisers) - their policy goes on risk without any need to take any medicals - the next week they go to the doctors feeling unwell (after never talking about it to anyone medical before this) and (IF) they are then diagnosed with a grim critical illness the policy pays out.

Maybe using the word "con" for the second example was a bit strong as they DID have something wrong with them however it was playing the system a little bit as (not surprisingly) if they had been to see their doctor a week before they applied they would have got diddly squat.

As for the other example - a company set up "somewhere" in England and essentially the "advisers" wrote about 2000 policies all with either made up names on or visiting the local cemetry - they knew the underwriting limits of the life companies and put policies to them that were squeaky clean - which meant when they applied online the policies went on risk instantly with the commission paid the following week - the problem for the life companies is that they will not claw back any commission until they have applied for the direct debit a couple of times therefore 6/8 weeks passed before anyone smelt a rat - as a result £2,000,000 out of pocket (and this was only one company) I believe there were 2 other companies taken for a similar amount.

Advisers responsible disappered without a trace.
