| It seems to me that too much money in the NHS is wasted on poor Management and Administration, and not enough makes it through to the front line where it is needed. How that situation gets turned around, when I guess there are people in the way looking out for their own, I have no idea.

The wife of a friend works for a PCT. She works in an office with a few dozen other staff. The PCT have several offices of a similar nature across the area
None of them have anything to do with front line treating of patients in any capacity - they are all admin staff (pen pushers).
Many of them openly admit they are there for the high wages, cast iron pension, generous holiday allowances and perks. One such perks appears to be taking as much time on the "sick" as possible, with little if any action taken against people who do.
Now I'm not against people earning a fair crust, but the point there is the word earning. Wages used to be poor in the NHS, but this was balanced by the fantastic pension and generous holidays (for many staff). Now it's higher wages than the private sector, plus perks.
Last year they had a "conference" at a 4-star hotel on the other side of the county with several other PCT's. This "conference" consisted of a handful of meetings, some "getting to know you" sessions and then a lavish evening meal (with free bar) and entertainment from none other than Jim Bowen, before an evening dancing away to the disco.
Clearly this necessitated an overnight stay at the hotel and because it was a few miles away, transport was also provided for everyone.
All of this was paid for by the PCT (ie mine and your taxes) with staff not having to put their hands in their pockets at any point.
They are forever on "workshops" and "seminars". No doubt they enjoy running ideas up flagpoles and seeing who salutes, or perhaps indulging in a little blue sky thinking.
I could go on... |

got it in one
DO NOT GET ME STARTED |
Turkeys don't vote for Christmas do they?
Here's another example.
As far as I can remember when I started work, Leeds Eastern Health Authority (LEHA) which has eventually morphed into the PCT had a handful of cars. Most were Fiesta 1.1L's in white with the LEHA logo on the doors - these were only provided to frontline staff who had a genuine need for transport to carry out their work. A handful of senior managers had Sierra 1.6L's in white. If I remember correctly the top bloke had a Granada. That was it.
Get yourself down the local PCT / hospital "management" car park (not the staff carpark where nurses and the like have to pay to park, I'm on about the right outside the door parking controlled by permits and security staff) and see if you can move for the expensive German motorcade that arrives at 9am and f*cks off again before 5. Who do you think is paying for that?
The NHS has some wonderful, dedicated and hard working staff. There are also an ever increasing number of leeches and deadwood. |
